Stay safe while paddling
False River, with its calm, scenic waters, and accessible paddling routes, is a favorite destination for paddlers in Louisiana. But despite its tranquility, it can still pose risks for paddlers unfamiliar with basic boating safety.
Whether you are a seasoned paddler or new to small craft boating, taking the time to understand safety procedures could be the difference between a fun day on the water and a dangerous one. Here is a guide to staying safe while kayaking, canoeing, or rafting on False River.
1
The Basics | Safety first. Always.
-
Always Wear a Life Jacket (PFD)
This one is non-negotiable. Louisiana state law requires a life preserver for every person operating a kayak, canoe, or paddleboard. It is also smart: no matter how confident you are in the water, unexpected capsizes happen.
-
Know How to Swim in a River Current
Swimming in still water is different from swimming in a current. If the current is pulling you down stream, make sure you have your feet first to protect from any debris that might be hidden underwater.
-
Never Paddle Alone
Bring at least one other paddler — and more is better. Make sure a friend or family member on land knows where you are and when you expect to return.
-
Know the Waterway
False River is relatively straightforward, but conditions and features can change. If you are unfamiliar with the area, go with someone who is or do your homework ahead of time.

don't rock the boat | balance and stability
-
Keep Your Weight Low and Centered
Never stand up or lean too far in a small craft. Shifting your weight can cause a capsize — one of the leading causes of injury for paddlers. -
Distribute Gear Evenly and Tie it Down
An overloaded or unbalanced kayak can easily tip. Secure your belongings and keep your load light. -
Practice Getting Back into Your Boat
It is best to know how to reboard your kayak or canoe from the water before you are forced to do it in an emergency. If you are not comfortable reboarding in the water, make sure you stay close enough to the shore that you can swim back while towing your watercraft.
3
Be Aware | Situational Awareness
-
Stay Alert to Your Surroundings
Watch for powerboats, floating debris, and sudden weather changes. False River may not have a strong current, but sudden winds and boat wakes can catch you off guard. -
Check the Weather Before You Go
False River can look calm one minute and become choppy with wind the next. Keep an eye on the sky and be ready to head for shore if bad weather is on the horizon. -
Never Paddle in a Lightning Storm
Water + lightning = serious danger. If a storm rolls in, get off the water immediately. -
Overhanging Branches: While the summer sun is hot in Louisiana, you want to avoid paddling under trees. Often times trees can be filled with tangled fishing line with hooks on the end. If you float under a tree, be sure to lean forward and have the back of your head up to protect your eyes and face from possible hooks.
